How to choose curtains for your space? There is no one right answer, the most important thing is that you and your family like it, happy with it, and here are 5 guiding questions that you could be asking to start your discussion.

Some people are sensitive with lights and easily wake up with a little bit of light, some people are less sensitive and can sleep very well in the daylight. What type of person are you?

In our busy light, a good sleep is the foundation for how we can function daily at work to achieve our ambitions, and at home to interact with the ones we love. If you’re somehow who struggles with getting enough sleep, we would suggest to go for darker colors like dark brown or dark blue, because darker colors of the blackout curtains has a better light blocking effect. The way is works is that in those blackout curtains, there are black light blocking threads waved into it. Our dark blackout curtains can block 90% percent of the light, and make sure that you get rested for your day. If you’re someone who is extra sensitive to lights and want to block that remaining 10% of lights, we can add an extra blackout layer to your blackout curtain, to make it happen. This will add some extra cost, but thinking about the following year of good sleep you’re getting, it definitely will worth it!

What is the color of my house?

Besides material, another important consideration is colors! You may or may not have an interior designer. In many cases, we are the interior designer of our own houses. Most of us have a favorite color, though when we are living with our partner, colors are a joint discussion and decision.

What is the color of your house? Look around, in the living room, what’s the color of your sofa? carpet? table? Other furnitures. What’s the color of your walls and floors? Once your found out the color of your home, think about, if you want something in harmony or in contract?

Choose curtains that are in harmony with the color of your house

Beige is a safe color that will go with those things.

Choose curtains that are in contrast with the color of your house

This is a bold move. If you think your home is somehow boring or missing an edge, and you want to create that feeling with curtains. Or perhaps your home is very colorful already and curtain just add another layer of fun. Then let your creativity fly! Choose some bold colors that are in contract with what’s already in your home. Patterns or no patterns? The trend of simplicity.

Do you want patterns on your curtains or just solid color? This might be an easy question for some, and a difficult one for others.

In curtain boutique, most of our clients go for options without patterns. I think it’s because they find the ones without patterns are more classic and simple. We see this market preference, and most of our curtain sample books are without patterns, just with different types of materials.

However, we are not completely saying goodbye to patterns. We do have 2 blackout material types with patterns, but those are really simple patterns, and not overwhelming. One with stripes in the same color, and one with some fading floral type that you can hardly notice it from far.

I’ve heard clients who went to other curtain shops and say, they showed me so many sample materials and I don’t like any of those. At curtain boutique, we observe market preferences and bring in our sense of aesthetic to filter out, and present the most classic, beautiful type of curtain materials for our clients. This makes it easier to choose curtains.

Another fun aspect: what curtain was in your room when you were a kid?

For me, in my room, I had this really busy pattern with bear with a yellowish material. For a period I found it cute, and when I got older, I found it’s too busy and a little childish. However, I didn’t really mind it, maybe it was just there for so long and I learnt to “unseen” it.

What I want to say here is, if you’re picking a color for your kids room, ask them. They may be small, but they may already have a prefered color. Throughout their grow up journey, maybe it’s a good idea to refresh it after some years.
